What are different grades of manuka honey for?

UMF and MGO are standardised indicators of the concentration of some of the bioactive chemical compounds found in manuka honey in any given sample of the stuff.

Bioactive chemical compounds, when applied to your skin or digested in your digestive tract, are able to give your body unique assistance in resisting infection, improving skin health and aiding digestion.

UMF and MGO are two individual grading systems.

UMF is an acronym meaning Unique Manuka Factor.

UMF is a complete and advanced grading system. It incorporates the measurement of MG (MGO) levels, but also includes additional testing of authenticity markers of the Manuka Honey. This includes dihydroxyacetone and leptosperin. UMF is an indicator of quality and purity of manuka honey.

MGO stands for methylglyoxal, the naturally occurring compound that makes Manuka Honey so unique. An MGO rating is a standardised measure of methyglyoxal content and is an indicator of quality.

Low grades, between UMF 5 and UMF 10 are Table Grade Manuka Honey.

These honeys are safe for daily ingestion.

Low to mid grades of UMF 10 to UMF 15 are called Therapeutic Grade.

These honeys are good for short term consumption. Stronger grades have more potency. This means they can fight more powerful or even dangerous bacterial infections.

Any honeys from UMF15 to UMF20 are Antibacterial Grade and useful for skin therapy.

UMF20 to UMF25 is a Superior Antibacterial Grade, for very bad wounds.

Mānuka Honey’s Natural Ingredients

Mānuka is a New Zealand native plant with a beautiful, sweet-smelling flower. Honeybees collect nectar from these flowers and use it to produce delicious Mānuka honey. When eaten as part of a healthy, balanced diet, high-quality Mānuka honey has a myriad of amazing benefits for your immune system, skin health, and much more.

Antiviral Properties

Studies have found that Mānuka honey can help you to fight the flu and various other viruses. Mānuka honey can also benefit your health by helping to stimulate immune-boosting cell production. Adding a tablespoon of our honey to your daily cup of tea can help to boost your immune system, in turn helping your body fight viruses.

Antibacterial Properties

Mānuka honey has strong antibacterial properties that can help stop harmful bacteria in its tracks by literally dehydrating the bacterial microbes. There are no known strains that can resist these effects, which makes Mānuka honey so affective. Mānuka honey can be used to soothe a sore throat and help your body fight the pain-causing bacteria.

Antimicrobial Properties

Mānuka honey has antimicrobial properties which can help fight wound infections, acne, and other skin problems. Microbial is a microorganism characteristic that can cause infections and disease, so of course antimicrobial means to help fight these. Applying Mānuka honey to cuts, rashes and wounds can help prevent infection and potentially speed up healing time. Honey also makes for a great ingredient in a homemade face mask!

Mānuka Honey for Wound Care

Mānuka honey can be used to dress and treat minor scrapes and cuts to promote rapid healing. The anti-bacterial benefits of Mānuka honey help to fight against infection.

Studies have found that Mānuka honey applied to chronic wounds can reduce pH levels and decrease wound size. Benefits of Mānuka Honey on Skin Acne caused by bacteria is no challenge for the antibacterial and antimicrobial properties of Mānuka honey.

Applying Mānuka honey directly on your skin as a face mask helps to balance pH levels and provide a healthy, moisturised glow.

Mānuka honey may additionally soothe other skin conditions such as eczema or other rashes.

Dental Care

Known oral health benefits of Mānuka honey include reduction of gum inflammation and plaque. When used as a mouthwash, Mānuka honey can reduce the presence of bad bacteria without removing the bacteria that work to keep your teeth healthy. This cleansing process helps to reduce the risk of gingivitis, tooth decay and plaque buildup.

Digestion Benefits

Mānuka honey’s anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties can also be beneficial for your digestion.

Benefits of eating Mānuka honey, even just one to two tablespoons a day, include relief for problems such as bloating, stomach discomfort and cramps.

Mānuka Honey – the Ultimate Energy Booster

The natural sweetness of pure Mānuka honey acts as a natural energy boost. The glucose and fructose in Mānuka honey provides both fast-acting and slow-releasing energy. For this reason, a teaspoon of honey is a great supplement for workout recovery or to combat that dreaded 3 pm slump.
